Speaker Introduction

Three reseachers are speaking in the next digital human symposium. Everyone is conducting advanced research in respective fields and achieving excellent performance. A brief introduction follows.

Katsushi Ikeuchi

Professor of the University of Tokyo

Dr. Katsushi Ikeuchi is a Professor at the Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo. He received the Ph.D. degree in Information Engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1978. After working at MIT-AI Lab for three years, ETL for five years, and CMU for ten years, he joined the university in 1996. His research interest spans computer vision, robotics, and computer graphics. He has received several awards, including the D. Marr award for the paper, "Shape-from-interreflection," and IEEE R&A K-S Fu memorial best transaction paper award for the paper, "Toward Automatic Robot Instruction from Perception." He was General/Program Chairs of several international conferences, including IROS95(general), CVPR96(Program), ITSC99(general), and ICCV03 (program). He was a distinguished lecturer of IEEE SP society 2001-2002. He is Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Computer Vision. He has been elected to a fellow of IEEE since 1998.

Mitsuo Kawato

Director of ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories

Prof. Kawato received the B.S. degree in physics from Tokyo University in 1976 and the M.E. and Ph. D. degrees in biophysical engineering from Osaka University in 1978 and 1981, respectively. From 1981 to 1988, he was a faculty member and lecturer at Osaka University. Professor Kawato has served as a director of ATR computational Neuroscience Laboratories and a research supervisor of JST, ICORP Computational Brain Project. He is now concurrently working as a visiting professor at Kanazawa Institute of Technology, Nara Institute of Science and Technology, Osaka University, the National Institute for Physiological Sciences and Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine. He has been appointed Toyama Prefectural University as a Specially Appointed Visiting Professor. He was awarded the Yonezawa founder's medal memorial special award of The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, in 1991, the outstanding research award of the International Neural Network Society in 1992, the Osaka Science Prize in 1993, the 10th Tsukahara Naka-akira Memorial Award in 1996, the Tokizane Toshihiko Memorial Award in 2001, IEICE fellow in 2004, the Chunichi Cultural Award and the Shida Rinzaburo Award in 2005, the Asahi Prize in 2007. He is a governing board member of the Japanese Society of Neuroscience and a Member of American Physiologica Society. He is currently serving as an Editor of HFSP Journal.

Demetri Terzopoulos

Chancellor's Professor of the University of California<

Demetri Terzopoulos is the Chancellor's Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Los Angeles. He graduated from McGill University and was awarded the PhD degree by MIT in 1984. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and a member of the European Academy of Sciences. He is the recipient of an Academy Award for Technical Achievement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his pioneering work on realistic cloth simulation for motion pictures. Among his many other honors are computer graphics awards from Ars Electronica and the International Digital Media Foundation for his work on artificial animals, from NICOGRAPH for his work on facial modeling and animation, and from Computers and Graphics for his work on biomechanical human animation. He is one of the most highly-cited computer scientists and engineers in the world, with approximately 300 published research papers and several volumes, primarily in computer graphics, computer vision, medical imaging, computer-aided design, and artificial intelligence/life. He has given hundreds of invited talks around the world, among them more than 60 distinguished lectures, including keynote talks at CGI, Eurographics, GI, and PG. Recently, he was a program chair of PG 2004 and a conference chair of SIGGRAPH/EG SCA 2005.
