The variation in Japanese body shapes can be understood by measuring many people. Using the measured data, it is possible to materialize a design that will effectively cover the variation in Japanese body shapes with fewer size classifications, by reviewing the size adjustment of products or the size classifications (S, M, L, etc.). Information on body sizes and shapes is the basis to support production of industrial products that suit Japanese bodies.

Specification of Measurement System

There are systems that measure shapes of objects by projecting striped patterns of light and using cameras from different directions. These systems called "Body Scanners" were specifically designed to measure human body shapes. However, some problems were found when these commercial systems were actually used:

The Fastest Human Body Shape Measurement Systems

Head Measurement System [ NEC Corporation ]

3-D head shapes can be measured in 0.93 seconds. Hidden areas were substantially reduced by installing a total of 12 cameras. In this method, the shape is measured by projecting patterned light, with an accuracy of 0.5mm and a measurement density of 1.0mm.

Whole Body Measurement System [ Hamano Engineering Co., Ltd. ]

3-D body shapes can be measured in 1.8 seconds. Hidden areas were substantially reduced by installing a total of 12 cameras. In this method, a shape is measured by multi-slit laser beam, with an accuracy of 1.0mm and a measurement density of 2.0mm.
